Kamaru Usman showcased why he is one of the elite contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division by defeating Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of the TUF 28 Finale by unanimous decision.
What was the high point of the fight?
Usman started with some good forward pressure backing up dos Anjos against the fence early. Landing a big double leg takedown, dos Anjos did a good job of getting back to his feet but he continued to fight off the takedown attempts from Usman.
After Usman landed another takedown, dos Anjos attempted a kimura from the bottom, but Usman did well to roll out of it. Come the fifth round Usman scored his tenth successful takedown of the fight, and he finished the fight how he begun it, pinning dos Anjos up against the fence landing lots of ground and pound.
Where do these two go from here?
With a UFC welterweight title fight between current champion Tyron Woodley and number one contender Colby Covington likely to happen next year, you have to think Kamaru Usman will be next in line for the winner of that fight. “The Nigerian Nightmare” extended his UFC winning streak to nine with the win over dos Anjos, so a title shot is all that makes sense for Usman.
Much like he did in 2016, dos Anjos has now dropped two straight fights. Playing matchmaker for ‘RDA’ is tough at this point, as the former UFC lightweight champion is in no place to pick and chose his next opponent. With a lot of the welterweight division currently having fights booked, a fight against Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards is one to make for dos Anjos.
Watch it now, later or never?
