Kickboxing import Stephen Thompson, despite being ranked No. 1 in the world at 170 pounds, may have inadvertently talked himself out of a welterweight title shot.

Partly because newly-crowned champion Tyron Woodley is a sensitive fella, but mostly because “Wonderboy” already went on record to ask for a Robbie Lawler fight. As luck would have it, he may still get that opportunity, but it won’t be for the division title.

Not if “The Chosen One” has any say in the matter.

That’s because Woodley has his eyes set on a potential super fight against former division kingpin Georges St-Pierre, who hung up the gloves in late 2013 but spent the better part of this year chirping about a possible return to mixed martial arts (MMA).

Woodley talks to UFC Tonight:

“He said he wanted the Robbie fight. He said that’s the better fight. And he thought Robbie was going to win. If I’m talking to Georges St-Pierre and he’s interested in fighting me, that’s the fight I want. I’m not going to fight Stephen. To say I’m the best welterweight, if I haven’t fought GSP, I couldn’t say it. Just the same way he wanted to fight Matt Hughes to prove himself. And it’s the most money. So I kill two birds with one stone.”

St-Pierre already said YES.

Woodley captured the crown by pasting Lawler in the first round of their UFC 201 headliner last weekend in Atlanta, Georgia (watch it). Thompson, meanwhile, has won eight straight. After laying waste to ex-champ Johny Hendricks, “Wonderboy” knocked around top contender Rory MacDonald.
