Don’t be stupid!
Top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight contender Demian Maia will collide with surging 170-pound striker Jorge Masvidal at the upcoming UFC 211 pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for May 13, 2017 inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
That’s according to the now-training 170-pound titleholder Tyron Woodley, who can’t understand why the Brazilian would accept a nightmare fight when “The Chosen One” was on the cusp of his latest title defense.
From UFC Unfiltered (via MMA Fighting):
“Unfortunately for Maia, he accepted the fight the week of me and Wonderboy’s fight. In my personal opinion, bad move. Wait and see how the fight went. If nobody came out of the fight hurt, a clear winner, not another draw, you’re already in a position to fight for a world title. Why would you put yourself up against the worst possible matchup outside of a title fight? Why would you put yourself in that position? I don’t want to call him stupid but damn that was stupid.”
The Brazilian explains his decision here.
Maia (24-6) is the winner of six straight, defeating some of the more prominent names in the division along the way, like venerable stalwarts Matt Brown and Carlos Condit. Why he was not previously guaranteed the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson 2, which took place earlier this year, remains a mystery.
I guess UFC was planning for something stupid, like this.
