UFC 214 on July 29th just got a third title belt added to it with welterweight champ Tyron Woodley taking on Demian Maia.
UFC 214 continues to get better and better.
After a rough day of news that saw Cris Cyborg’s opponent for the 145 pound women’s featherweight title switch from Megan Anderson to Tonya Evinger, we now have news that a welterweight title fight between champ Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia has been added to the card. UFC 214 goes down on July 29th in Anaheim, California at the Honda Center and is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones.
That brings the number of belts up for grab to three and solidifies the event as the biggest the UFC has put together for 2017 thus far. And according to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, it sets up even bigger things for the promotion in the future:
UFC rushed to do Woodley-Maia in July so they could have winner fight GSP at MSG. 214 is amazing, but I feel for Maia: deserved more time.

“UFC rushed to do Woodley-Maia in July so they could have winner fight GSP at MSG,” Helwani wrote. “214 is amazing, but I feel for Maia: deserved more time.”
Ariel is referring to Maia’s request for some time off following his victory over Jorge Masvidal just over a month ago at UFC 211. Speaking to reporters at the post-event press conference, Maia noted his summer schedule was already packed full with responsibilities related to his gym franchises.
But apparently a shot at the 170 pound belt (and possibly GSP if he’s really moved on from fighting Michael Bisping) was enough to get him to sign on the dotted line for UFC 214. That event takes place just 11 weeks after his last performance at UFC 211.
