The verdict is in!
Tyron Woodley will defend his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title opposite “Wonderboy” Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 on Nov. 12 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. The reigning 170-pound champion, who defeated Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 via knockout to claim the title, revealed the news earlier today (Fri., Sept. 16, 2016) on FOX Sports 1 (shown above, courtesy of UFC).
This is gigantic news for a UFC 205 card that has dragged on without a title fight. While it is unknown if Woodley vs. Thompson will headline the massive PPV card, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans can now breathe a collective sigh of relief. After all, Woodley had previously declared Thompson undeserving of a shot at welterweight gold, pinpointing other potential suitors like former champion Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz.
Thompson, 33, sports one of the more bewildering fighting styles in the game today. His ability to close distance, strike from range and confuse even the best defensive gurus should immediately put Woodley in danger. As for Woodley, 34, he just destroyed Lawler at UFC 201 and looks to possess a perfect concoction of power, speed, striking and wrestling, needed to remain atop the welterweight division.
Woodley and Thompson will join a fight card that already includes the likes of former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Tim Kennedy and the always entertaining Donald Cerrone,
