Top-ranked Featherweight contenders Max Holloway (No. 5) and Jeremy Stephens (No. 8) tonight (Sat., Dec. 12, 2015) kicked off the UFC 194 pay-per-view (PPV) main card from inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
And the pair wasted little time mixing it up, as Stephens stormed out of his corner with a whipping low kick. He uncorked several more as Holloway took the first minute to line up his first strike of the fight, clearly respecting the one-punch knockout power of Stephens. Holloway caught Stephens with a nice right hook, then attempted to follow up with a kick to the body, but “Lil’ Heathen” caught his leg and worked for a takedown along the fence.
The pair battled for position for almost one full minute before Holloway broke free, landing a nice knee to the belly and a straight left jab to the kisser. Stephens found success with another low kick, as Holloway just missed with a looping left hand. Rond one ended with them tangled along the cage.
Round two began much like the opening frame, but Holloway got off to a much quicker start, pressuring Stephens and then disengaging after he lands what he wants. Stephens landed a nice uppercut as Holloway jumped in to land a right hand, his best punch of the fight at the time. He looked to build off the momentum with a takedown, but Holloway stubbornly fought him until he was free in the center of the Octagon. At the mid-point of round two, both fighters finally opening up, letting their fists fly in a flurry before Stephens once again angled for a takedown.
On the break, Holloway drilled him with a nice right hand along the cage, motivating Stephens to once again attempt a takedown, which was once again unsuccessful.
