One of the most successful and popular fighters in the UFC is back for good. As announced weeks ago, Jon Jones, who was stripped from his title due some legal problems, wants to reclaim the 205-pound title, but he faces a tough task as he has to face the current Champ, Daniel Cormier, in a thrilling five-round championship main event set for April, 2016.
The fight is a rematch of UFC 182. The first encounter between these two was held in Las Vegas on January 3rd, 2015. Cormier, who was practically unknown in the UFC circuit, was defeated by Jon Jones by unanimous decision, but despite the loss, Cormier was awarded a Fight of the Night bonus.
Things are likely to be different this time. The first time Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones met, Cormier had little experience at light heavyweight. His only experience came against Dan Henderson and Patrick Cummins. Since his fight against Jones, Cormier added a couple of bouts to his resume, capturing the vacant crown against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, and beating Alexander Gustafsson by split decision at UFC 192.
Despite his yearlong suspension and the inactivity, Jones says he’s unimpressed ahead of their April 23 rematch against Cormier.
“I beat the two best men in the division, and now we’re right back where we started. But this time it’s different. I’m the champion, and by him getting out of the game for as long as he’s been, it allowed me to be more comfortable in this weight division. It allowed me to get through those wars that I need to prepare for the war that I’m going to have with him.”
