UFC 200 is set to unfold tonight (Sat., July 9, 2016) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. But, before the UFC 200 PPV main card begins at 10 p.m. ET, a stacked “Prelims” undercard set the stage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).
In the final FS1 “Prelims” bout, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano made her return to the Octagon for the first time since her 14-second loss to Ronda Rousey back at UFC 184. Her opponent, former TUF winner Julianna Pena, was trying to win the biggest fight of her young career.
Both women came out of the gate looking to grapple. After exchanging early first-round takedowns, Zingano began to score some points in top position. She rode Pena for the majority of the round and showed great pressure on the ground.
As the second round began, Zingano took the action to the ground again. But after a failed submission attempt, Pena was able to take Zingano’s back and land some good offense. Pena was able to soften “Alpha” up and take her back, threatening with a rear naked choke as Round 2 came to a screeching halt.
It was much of the same in the third round as Pena continued to pepper Zingano with hard shots from side control and half mount. She looked absolutely dominant in top control against a fighter who is known as one of the better grapplers in the 135-pound division. While Pena couldn’t finish Zingano, she overpowered the former title contender en route to capturing the unanimous decision win.
The victory certainly lands Pena on a short list of deserving title contenders as divisional champion, Miesha Tate, defends her gold later tonight opposite Amanda Nunes on PPV.
