community news, UFC 202 results: Lorenz Larkin mows through Neil Magny to earn first round stoppage

It’s always a risk when a fighter enters MMA’s equivalent of free agency. The last fight on their contract can often be difficult and the results can hugely affect what comes next.

Luckily for UFC welterweight Lorenz Larkin, who entered Saturday’s event on the last fight of his UFC contract, his emphatic win over Neil Magny as the headlining bout on the Fight Pass-portion of the UFC 202 preliminary card will work to his benefit.

From the opening bell, Larkin’s explosive speed gave Magny all kinds of problems. That’s true for Larkin’s hand speed as well as his devastating oblique and leg kicks.

Less than halfway through, it appeared Magny was in trouble. Hobbled from the pain of the leg kicks, he was immobile and unable to do much but try to clinch with Larkin.

In the end, it was enough as the onslaught from Larkin forced referee Dan Miragliotta to call a halt to the bout at 4:08 into the first round. Despite the competitive betting odds that saw Larkin as a slight underdog, it was Magny who was never ever really in the fight.

“I’m happy, man,” Larkin told UFC commentator Joe Rogan post fight. “A couple of fights ago, everybody knows my back was against the wall with [John] Howard. I was trying to fight to stay in the UFC. I started working my way, start proving myself. Look what happened.

“I know a lot of you guys don’t know who I am, but I’m here,” he continued. “What’s up?”

With the win, Larkin moves to 18-5 with 1 no contest. Magny drops to 18-5.
