Well that’s a fine how-do-you-do.
A pair of top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight contenders will hook ‘em up at the upcoming UFC 207 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which takes place this Friday night (Dec. 30, 2016) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
But TJ Dillashaw and John Lineker won’t be competing for a chance to fight the winner of Dominick Cruz vs. Cody Garbrandt, also featured at UFC 207.
Or will they?
“The great thing about the bantamweight division right now, it’s on fire,” UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby said (transcribed by MMA Junkie). “I don’t think there’s another division with more contenders. We’ll see what we get out of this fight (as far as a title shot). On paper, regardless of title contendership, it’s straight fire. It’s all offense.”
That may come as a surprise, especially when you consider Dillashaw and Lineker are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the division, respectively. Garbrandt, meanwhile, is ranked No. 5 and garnered his crack at the crown by stopping No. 15-ranked Takeya Mizugaki.
Maybe it’s punishment? Dillashaw has been complaining about UFC for several months and even joined MMAAA, while Lineker struggled to make weight in multiple appearances (and in multiple weight classes).
It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
