No disrespect to Tim Boetsch, but I don’t think that’s the fight top Middleweight contender Ronaldo Souza was eying in his return to the Octagon. Nevertheless, “Jacare” signed on the dotted line to face “The Barbarian” at the upcoming UFC 208 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which is set to go down on Feb. 11, 2017 inside Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Fox Sports brought word of the matchup via Newsday.
Souza — who was last seen schooling Vitor Belfort at UFC 198 last May — was scheduled to face Luke Rockhold in a No. 1 contenders fight in November before Luke was pulled from the event with an injury. Prior to that, the submission wizard suffered a split-decision to Romero, breaking his eight-fight win streak.
As for Boetsch, he’s currently enjoying a two-fight win streak, with his latest win coming against Rafael Natal at UFC 205 last November. The back-to-back wins against Natal and the late Josh Samman helped “The Barbarian” revive his funk, snapping a three-fight skid and earning him the high-profile fight against “Jacare.”
That said, the matchup might be puzzling to some, as Souza is likely one win away from a title shot and is ranked No. 3 overall, while Boetsch is barely hanging on to a top 15 spot, sitting at No. 14 on the official rankings. Nevertheless, Tim will look to fully take advantage of the opportunity by ruining Souza’s title hopes and making a case for his own, in the process.
