UFC 208 results from last night: Glover Teixeira vs Jared Cannonier fight recap

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight knockout artists Glover Teixeira and Jared Cannonier threw down last night (Feb. 11, 2017) at UFC 208 inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Teixeira put together a solid streak of finishes to return to the title mix, but that all fell apart at the ridiculously heavy hands of Anthony Johnson. Looking to rebound from that loss, Teixeira stepped into the cage opposite a dangerous but fairly unknown athlete. Though this was a big step up in competition, Cannonier spent most of his career throwing down with Heavyweights. The Alaskan was undeterred by Teixeira’s experience, and he hoped to use his quickness to bring him a third straight win.

As expected, Teixeira stalked his opponent immediately to begin the bout. Cannonier was moving well, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt still landed some hard shots and a single-leg takedown within the first minute of the bout.

From top position, Cannonier did an admirable job of defending himself, but Teixeira’s experience still shined. Working with hard elbows and punches, Teixeira methodically worked around his opponent’s guard, hunting for different submissions. He pretty much dominated the entire round until the final 10 seconds, in which Cannonier managed to get up and land some hard shots.

It was a glimmer of hope, but Cannonier needed more.

The Alaskan looked quick and sharp to begin the second round, but Teixeira’s single leg takedown proved too much once again. Teixeira remained active from top position, punching and passing, but Cannonier did a really nice job of recovering guard and controlling posture.

A terrible stand up brought them back to the feet with about 90 seconds remaining. Cannonier kept his speed but his activity began to wane, whereas Teixeira picked up the pace a bit and began to throw more.

Both men landed by the end of the round, but Teixeira controlled most of the round.

Cannonier had no answer for Teixeira’s single leg takedown, which the Brazilian turned to very quickly in the final frame. This time, he was able to advance into the full mount and back mount, where he delivered some hard strikes as Cannonier recovered guard.

Finally, Teixeira’s wrestling had taken its toll on Cannonier, who was fairly tired. He still did a very nice job of defending himself from the bottom, but he absorbed a lot more damage in the process. The Alaskan eventually made it back to his feet, but it was too late for him to make anything happen.

Teixeria needed a bounce back victory, and he got one. It wasn’t the prettiest win of his career, but “Hands of Stone” was able to dominate a tough and talented prospect after a devastating loss.

In short, a win is a win.

Despite Teixeira’s many knockout wins, it’s important to remember that he’s a stellar grappler. The takedown was there whenever he attempted it, and his top game was effective in wearing down his opponent while threatening with submissions.

Next up for Glover Teixeira should be a match with Misha Cirkunov, but it seems like Cirkunov is headed for a different promotion.

Cannonier did not win this fight, but he proved that he’s a top talent. On the feet, he went tit-for-tat with Teixeira — one of the division’s fiercest punchers — without issue. Additionally, his cardio held up well, as Cannonier was dangerous and fighting back until the very end.

Ultimately, Cannonier’s defensive wrestling failed him. Each time Teixeira attempted the single-leg, Cannonier failed to defend it in a meaningful way. He fought well from his back, but he may have found the knockout if he’d actually been able to defend the original shot.

Last night at UFC 208, Glover Teixeira ground out Jared Cannonier. Can Teixeira get back into the title mix?
