Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 265-pound contender Alistair Overeem, who boasts championship belts in DREAM, Strikeforce, and K-1 Kickboxing, has yet to wrangle the one strap that has eluded him throughout his combat sports career.
I’m talking, of course, about the UFC heavyweight title.
“The Reem” came close during his bangfest with Stipe Miocic last fall, but the first-round fireworks left the hulking Dutchman looking up at the lights, paving the way for longtime nemesis Junior dos Santos to step in and try to reclaim the crown.
More on that title fight here.
“That would be very good for my title attempts if Junior would win,” Overeem told MMA Junkie. “Because the rematch could be there. So I’m definitely rooting for Junior in this one, for a change.”
Overeem (41-15, 1 NC) stopped “Cigano” when they went to war at UFC on FOX 17.
But “Demolition Man” won’t be getting anything from anyone until he first gets through Mark Hunt, also a rematch, at the UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) event next month in Las Vegas, Nevada (details).
Overeem, who won their first bout by way of submission back in PRIDE FC, is “confident” that history will repeat itself in “Sin City.”
We’ll find out in just a few weeks.
