Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, was out to prove tonight (Sat., May 13, 2017) that he would not serve as a stepping stone for Yair Rodriguez, the red-hot 24-year-old Featherweight who was on a blistering eight-fight win streak. And did he ever — Edgar took Rodriguez back behind the woodshed and beat the ever-living shit out of him en route to a second round technical knockout via doctor stoppage.

Edgar came out of his corner and immediately put the pressure on Rodriguez, who backed away and looked to maintain distance so that he could fire off his fancy kicks. Edgar shot in for a takedown and eventually got the fight on his terms less than two minutes into the match. Rodriguez did a great job of keeping Edgar in full guard and nailing him with a few hammerfists from the bottom. Edgar, though, dished out more punishment, finding a home for his relentless ground-and-pound. Rodriguez squirmed, wiggled and flailed his legs to try and escape, but Edgar put an absolute brutal assault on him for about three full minutes. By the time the round ended, Rodriguez was beaten and bloody with a huge mouse under his left eye that almost closed it completely.

Rodriguez came out looking to establish distance with his legs, but Edgar was able to sneak in a nice short shot. Rodriguez went for another kick, which Edgar used to score another takedown; however, Rodriguez was able to roll for a very tight kneebar. Edgar defended brilliantly and began to smash him in his face, forcing Rodriguez to abondon the submission. Edgar once again landed in top position and smashed Rodriguez’s eye with hard elbows. Rodriguez bucked and tried to get Edgar off him, but “The Answer” was just too much. Once again, Edgar poured it on him for several devastating minutes until he was saved by the bell once again.

Between rounds, the ringside doctor evaluated Rodriguez’s eye, which was swollen shut and severely damaged. He didn’t like what he saw even though Rodriguez said he could see out of it and the referee eventually called the match because of total orbital destruction.
