community news, UFC 211: Stipe Miocic interested in boxing match with Anthony Joshua

UFC heavyweight champion and all-around fan favorite Stipe Miocic says he’d be interested in testing himself against British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Two weeks ago, Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko put on a fight for the ages. The two heavyweight boxing stars turned in a 12-round classic that gave even the most cynical boxing fans a renewed appreciation for the sweet science. One such fan is UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.

Miocic is well-known for his elite level wrestling skill, but his heavy hands have been on prominent display of late, something that both Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum can attest to, as well as 10 other unfortunate men that were ushered into the Sandman’s house, courtesy of the Ohio firefighter’s fist-hammers. In this week’s episode of the Three Amigos Podcast, Miocic voiced his opinion on the Joshua/Klitschko fight, and expressed interest in a future boxing bout of his own.

“I saw a good bit of it, and it was a great fight, definitely. They came after each other and gave people what they wanted to see. They took it to town and they didn’t care what happened. They were just trying to knock each other out, which people love.”

While some had a hard time processing that Joshua was able to deliver Klitschko his second, straight loss, Miocic wasn’t one of them. Born of the philosophy that anything can happen on any given day, Stipe wasn’t surprised by the British champion’s win over the man that ruled boxing’s heavyweight division for more than a decade.

“No, not at all. You never know what’s gonna happen in a fight, that’s the thing. Joshua had a lot of confidence coming in. He knew he could hang. Klitschko is at the end of his career, but still, you never knew if the veteran was gonna take over, or if the young, hungry guy wanted it more. There’s just so many aspects you don’t know. You just never knew what was gonna happen.”

Miocic is the latest in a long line of fighters that are interested in testing themselves in the boxing arena, an idea that is offputting to some fans, and thrilling to others.

“Oh yeah, 100-percent. I would love to do that. It’d be great. I’d love to fight Joshua. I think that would be an amazing opportunity against an amazing fighter. I think I’ve got what it takes to give him a run for his money—I might beat him. I know he’s tough, but so am I.”
