UFC 212: Ahead of Anderson Silva middleweight bout, Kelvin Gastelum says he’s not done chasing welterweight title

Despite missing weight on a few occasions and finding success as a Middleweight, Kelvin Gastelum can’t seem to let the Welterweight division go.

After defeating Tim Kennedy and Vitor Belfort in back-to-back impressive knockout wins since moving up to 185 pounds, Gastelum said his goal is still to win the 170 pounds title.

“But, I’m thinking about getting the 170 belt, but if I have to get the 185 belt before, so be it,” he said during a recent interview on The MMA Hour via MMA Fighting.

“We’ll see after this fight,” Gastelum said. “I dunno. Hopefully I’ll be in a position when I win this fight I can lay out a few options and see what they are and go from there. Next step would be title shot at ’85, but realistically that might not happen.”

Of course, he UFC’s title picture at Middleweight and Welterweight is clouded at the moment after Georges St-Pierre announced his comeback. “GSP” was booked to face 185-pound champ, Michael Bisping, for his first fight back, leaving many top contenders out in the cold.

A move Kelvin didn’t agree with.

“While people were saying Anderson was the greatest of all-time, I was saying GSP was the greatest of all-time. He’s my favorite fighter and he’s viable. I don’t agree with him skipping Romero when he clearly deserves it.”

Win, lose, or draw against “The Count,” St-Pierre still has the option to either defend the strap or try to win the welterweight belt again, which could leave plenty of top 170-pound contenders out in the cold for a bit.

As for Kelvin’s scale fails at 170 pounds, the former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner says it’s all about trying to find the right, healthy way to drop the pounds.

“I just know that I can make it. I just had to figure out a healthy way to make it. Instead of cutting it all, I had to figure out how to make my body work and how to do it right. For sure.”

Gastelum will look to make it three straight wins in a row when he takes on his biggest challenge to date, as he faces Anderson Silva at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017.
