UFC 212 is going down tonight (Sat., June 3, 2017) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight champion Jose Aldo puts his title on the line opposite interim 145-pound kingpin, Max Holloway. The division crown has not really been stable since Conor McGregor defeated Aldo in just 13 seconds back in Dec. 2015. McGregor, of course, never defended the Featherweight belt, instead taking back-to-back Lightweight fights against Nate Diaz before challenging — and taking the belt from — 155-pound roost ruler, Eddie Alvarez, six months ago.
It’s been a long, strange mixed martial arts (MMA) trip ever since, with Aldo competing just once since that “Notorious” loss — a unanimous decision win over Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 last summer. The Brazilian was supposed to defend the belt against Holloway at UFC 208 earlier this year, but a leg injury shelved the Hawaiian after his win over Anthony Pettis at UFC 206 last year. Indeed, Holloway became the first fighter to stop “Showtime” inside of the cage, extending his win streak to 10 and claiming the interim strap.
In other pay-per-view (PPV) main card action, MMA legend Vitor Belfort will compete inside the Octagon for the final time (maybe) against 47-fight veteran, Nate Marquardt. The Brazilian made a big push to finish out his storied career in his native Brazil and he seems determined more than ever to go out on a high note, leaving sunny south Florida and his Blackzilians training partners for a fresh look with Firas Zahabi, head of Tristar Gym in Montreal, Canada. Belfort (25-13, 1 NC) needs all the help he can get, going down in flames in four of his last five bouts. While his most recent shellacking was overturned because Kelvin Gastelum likes to smoke reefer, it’s clear that the Brazilian has not looked competitive in many moons and can use all the help he can get.
In addition to the PPV main card, UFC 212 features other entertaining bouts on the Fight Pass and FOX Sports 1 “Prelims” undercard, particularly the Octagon debut of former World Series of Fighting (WSOF) Bantamweight champion, Marlon Moraes, who will attempt to prove his talent — and worth — at the expense of No. 3-ranked division contender, Raphael Assuncao. It’s going to be a fun night!
