Even the winner of the UFC 212 welterweight matchup between Yancy Medeiros and Erick Silva thought the stoppage came a little too soon.
“The ref could have let it go a little bit more, but that’s not my call,” Medeiros said after earning a TKO victory at 2:01 of the second round on Saturday night.
But early stoppage or no, there’s little dispute Medeiros’ matchup with Silva was an exciting affair, as the two traded heavy shots back and forth before Medeiros won for the third time in his past four fights.
Medeiros rocked Silva early in the opening round in Rio de Janeiro, but Silva recovered and picked up the pace. He mixed up big punches with punishing leg and body kicks, with a late flurry likely giving him the bod.
But Medeiros answered the call in the second round. He landed a big overhand right and a vicious left hook on the button which dropped Silva to the mat. He started landing punches on the grounded Silva, who was still defending when the fight was waved off, a decision which did not leave the crowd happy.
The Hawaiian credited his coaches advice for earning his 11th career stoppage.
“Coaches told me I was being too passive in the first round, I had to bring it in the second round and that’s what I did,” he said.
Silva (19-8, 1 NC) lost for the third time in his past four fights.
