LAS VEGAS — Travis Browne worked with former UFC heavyweight champion and grappling specialist Josh Barnett leading up to Browne’s UFC 213 match up with Oleksiy Oliynyk, knowing Oliynyk was a submission master himself.

It didn’t matter. Oliynyk overcame a slow start and made Browne the 43rd submission victim of his career on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Browne tapped out to a choke at 3:44 of the second round.

Browne had the better of things in the first half of the the first round and appeared on the verge of putting his opponent away after a big shot. But Oliynyk regained his bearings, found his range, and had taken control of the fight by round’s end.

In the second, Oliynyk waded in fearlessly and peppered Browne with uppercuts in close to the head and body. Browne curiously went for a takedown and couldn’t do much with it. When they got back to their feet, Oliynyk took it right back to the ground, softened Browne up with ground-and-pound, and got in position for the winning choke.

With the victory, Oliynyk improved to 52-10-1, 4-1 in the UFC. Browne (18-7-1) has lost four in a row and five of his past six.
