UFC 214: ‘Jones vs. Cormier 2’ estimated at 860,000 PPV buys

The UFC machine is back in business. After experiencing a lull in big-time fight cards this year, UFC 214, which featured the highly-anticipated rematch between light heavyweights Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, pulled in 860,000 pay-per-view (PPV) buys based on cable estimates, per a recent report by MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer.

Jones ended up winning the championship rematch on July 29 from inside Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., by knocking “DC” out via third-round head kick.

While the estimated totals are slightly less than UFC president Dana White’s early projections, it is still quite the turnaround for the promotion after UFC 213 pulled in an estimated 130,000 PPV buys roughly one month before.

Without the likes of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and all-around PPV cash cow Ronda Rousey at its disposal, the promotion has struggled to produce eye-popping numbers in 2017. But with a rematch between two of the best 205-pound fighters of all time headlining UFC 214, things had to go right. They did.

In fact, Jones vs. Cormier 2 did better than Jones’ first meeting with “DC” back at UFC 182, which produced roughly 800,000 PPV buys. The rematch understandably attracted more interest considering Jones was making his return to greatness after countless run ins with the law outside of the cage.

If UFC can somehow give Jones what he wants and match the light heavyweight king up against former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar sometime in 2018, the promotion will be in for another massive PPV earning.
