Tyron Woodley exerted all efforts to keep himself off the mat against Demian Maia to win the fight and retain the title via decision.
The second title fight of the night featured welterweight champion Tyron Woodley facing another specialist in Demian Maia. It was greatly expected for Maia to fully utilize his more than stellar grappling game, but Woodley did his homework and prevented all of the 27 takedowns attempted at him.
What was the high point of the fight?
The “high point” was during the first few moments of the fight when Woodley actually landed the right hand that gave Maia a huge mouse under his left eye. Woodley also landed a right upper cut in the middle rounds that floored Maia, but the huge chunk of the fight was a Woodley stuffing all of his challenger’s takedowns.
Joe Rogan branded it as “smart fighting”, but Woodley’s performance was once again met with boos by the crowd in attendance.
Where do these two go from here?
At 39 years of age, Maia might have just reached the pinnacle of his lengthy and remarkable UFC career. While he can still compete against the top fighters at 170-pounds, it would not be a surprise if he decided to go for retirement, either.
Like he always had since defending his for the first time in his rematch against Stephen Thompson, Woodley would likely call out another big name for his next fight. But as Dana White himself stated during the pre-fight presser, Woodley would be facing Georges St-Pierre, next.
Watch it now, later, or never?
This fight can be saved for later, but if you are either a Maia fan or a fan of high-energy action, you’d probably be better off skipping this.
