EDMONTON, Alberta — Most of the talk going into the UFC 215 featured prelim bout between Sara McMann and Ketlen Vieira centered around the idea McMann would be in line for a bantamweight title shot with a victory.

Instead, Saturday night was Vieira’s time to shine. The undefeated Brazilian shook off a slow start and finished McMann in the second with an arm triangle choke. The time of the finish was 4:16 of the second round.

“I took a lot of hard shots, it was a very hard fight, but I knew if I persevered the submission was there,” Vieira (9-0) said through an interpreter.

McMann, who rode a three-fight win streak into the beat and had just recently switched gyms to Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, looked well on her way to victory in the first. She scored a take down, maintained good position from top, and landed elbows and ground-and-pound punches.

The unbeaten Vieira, though, got McMann into a kneebar in the round’s final 20 seconds, and that portended things to come.

Vieira outworked McMann in the clinch in the second, scored a trip, then from there, manuevered into position for the choke. McMann fought it off as long as she could before tapping.

The victory improved Vieira to 3-0 in the UFC. McMann dropped to 11-4.
