A very late injury has led to the cancellation of the UFC 216 heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Derrick Lewis.
Just a few minutes before UFC 216 was set to begin, one of the main bouts on the main card has been called off. The heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Derrick Lewis will not take place on the card, reportedly due to an injury to Lewis’ back. UFC announcer Jon Anik broke the bad news on Twitter:
Fabricio Werdum v. Derrick Lewis is off due to an injury to one of the fighters. First fight now 4PM PT. #UFC216

And MMA Junkie’s John Morgan provided some clarification:
Injury is believed to be an aggravation of Lewis’ back, but no official word yet.

Lewis has had back issues for a long time, which has limited him in training for recent bouts. He seemed to be over it and had been training hard with a new diet regimen for this fight, but apparently he must have tweaked it in the last 24 hours since the weigh-in.
It’s not yet clear what fight will be bumped up to the main card of the PPV to replace this, but the event will now go forward at 7pm ET instead of 6:30pm.
