With Derrick Lewis off of UFC 216, Walt Harris has been removed from his scheduled fight against Mark Godbeer to take on Fabricio Werdum.
Just before the start of the UFC 216 preliminary card, it was announced that a heavyweight bout between Derrick Lewis and Fabricio Werdum was scratched due to Lewis aggravating his back, which has been problematic for him in the past. In another surprise twist, Werdum will remain on the PPV main card, as he’s agreed to fight Walt Harris.
Mark Godbeer was originally scheduled to fight Harris on the Fight Pass preliminary card, but instead the UFC has opted to scrap Godbeer-Harris and have Harris take on Werdum at the last minute. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani is awaiting confirmation on Godbeer being compensated after his hopes of fighting tonight were dashed.
This is the biggest fight of Harris’ career and it’s come under bizarre circumstances. “The Big Ticket” holds a record of 10-5 (3-4 UFC), with consecutive knockout wins over Cyril Asker and Chase Sherman in his last two outings.
UFC 216 will proceed with 11 bouts, having had 13 on tap at the start of Friday.
