Featherweight contender Renato Moicano dominated Calvin Kattar to earn a huge win at UFC 223.
At the midway point of the UFC 223 main card in Brooklyn, New York, featherweight Renato Moicano bounced back from his loss to Brian Ortega with a terrific performance against Calvin Kattar, handily outstriking “The Boston Finisher” on his way to a one-sided decision win. Leg kicks told the story of the fight from the opening round to the final horn, and Kattar’s formidable stand-up was made to be ordinary.
Moicano got tagged with a hard right hand about a minute into the first round, and Kattar teed off with a combination of punches against the fence, but the Brazilian was able to get out of danger. A right hand and body kick combo would later score for Moicano, in what was a glorified kickboxing match. Kattar had some problems with Moicano’s leg kicks, which chopped away at both the lead and rear legs. The refusal to check those kicks led to Moicano closing the round strongly.
In round two, Moicano continued to build on his success from the previous round, and was winning the majority of the striking exchanges. The leg kicks were just severely hampering Kattar’s movement, and it forced him to switch stances. Moicano just picked his shots extremely well and jarred Kattar’s head back with an uppercut after a couple more kicks. Even when switching stances, Moicano just went after the other leg. Kattar was visibly frustrated and unable to land any telling blows.
Moicano connected on multiple overhand rights and just put on a striking clinic. Kattar just couldn’t get anything going and was well off on his timing. Moicano cracked him once more with an uppercut and punctuated that combination with a leg kick for the umpteenth time. A pair of right hands and a head-body flurry had Kattar in a bothersome state. One more uppercut rocked Kattar, who tried to get that knockout shot, but it never came, and Moicano had his hand raised after a sensational display.
Official results: Renato Moicano def. Calvin Kattar by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)
