Yoel Romero has now blown his shot at both the interim and undisputed versions of the UFC middleweight championship after failing to make weight for UFC 225 on Friday in Chicago.
Romero was supposed to have challenged Robert Whittaker for the undisputed middleweight title on Saturday in Chicago, but failed to hit the mark, despite receiving an additional two hours to make weight.
He first stepped on the scale at 186 pounds, as the last fighter to weigh-in during the initial two-hour window. With the bout being a title fight, he had to hit the mark of 185 pounds or less. But also because of it being a title fight, Illinois officials allowed for an additional two hours for Romero to make weight.
Romero returned at the very end of his additional two hours weighing 185.2 pounds, still not within the allowed limit for a championship fight.
He also missed weight for his shot at the interim UFC middleweight title when he faces Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 earlier this year. Despite missing weight, Romero won the bout and was still granted a title shot with Whittaker. Now, however, the bout is in doubt pending negotiations between the two camps to keep it intact, which could also be complicated by potential hurdles in gaining medical clearance because of the difficult weight cut.
