UFC 229 midweek & weigh-in betting odds: Khabib comfortably favored over McGregor

19 0

One of the most anticipated matchups in UFC history is upon us as UFC 229 kicks off this Saturday (October 6th), headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor, for the UFC lightweight belt. Boy, are there odds. Looking at the main event, we have Nurmagomedov sporting a favored line of around -165, with McGregor rocking an underdog tag of around +155.

In a press release from Oddschecker.com, they had this to say about the influx of wagers for the UFC 229 main event,

“This week alone, the ‘Notorious One’ has accounted for 69% of bets, substantially more than he accrued in the previous weeks. It’s believed the wave of support is due to the press conference held between him and his Russian counterpart, with a flurry of bets being placed immediately afterwards. Only 26% of bets this week have been placed on Nurmagomedov winning the contest, with the remainder placed on the title bout finishing as a draw.”

Now, despite a significantly higher amount of wagers on McGregor than Nurmagomedov this week, the undefeated defending champion remains the betting favorite. “How can that be?” one might ask. Well, perhaps those wagers were for relatively smaller amounts, or maybe there was just so much dropped on the side of Nurmagomedov to begin with, that whatever came in for McGregor wasn’t enough to swing the odds.

But why was there such an influx of wagers on McGregor instead of Nurmagomedov? Well, a lot of bettors realize that the line was going to tighten, so the sooner they got in on McGregor then the better value they would receive. Since the influx of McGregor wagers occurred, those wanting to make a slow play at Nurmagomedov made their move. Those siding with Khabib allowed the money to flow in for “The Notorious,” and then once Nurmagomedov’s line scooted closer to even odds, that’s when they dropped their bets. This second wave of bettors is what has sent Nurmagomedov’s line back up to around the -165 mark, and shoved McGregor’s line out to about +155. Don’t be surprised to see another wave of bettors swooping in after the weigh-ins.
