UFC champ T.J. Dillashaw: Urijah Faber fight would be ‘easiest payday ever’

New UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw doesn’t think much of his former Team Alpha Male teammate Urijah Faber.

T.J. Dillashaw doesn’t think former teammate Urijah Faber would give him much of a fight.

Faber, who stepped away from MMA last December after a win over Brad Pickett, recently said he would consider coming out of retirement to fight Dillashaw to avenge Cody Garbrandt’s title loss. Dillashaw took away the UFC bantamweight title from Garbrandt by second-round TKO at UFC 217 last weekend.

While Dillashaw vs. Faber may not be realistic today, things can change. Dillashaw isn’t worried about a potential matchup versus “The California Kid,” though.

“That’s hilarious,” Dillashaw told B.J. Penn Radio (transcript via MMAMania.com). “It sounds like the easiest payday ever. I mean, it’s just comical. I mean, come out of retirement, get a title shot off of what, losing to Jimmie Rivera and looking like crap in his fights? I mean, it’s hilarious. But like I said, it’d be an easy payday, so I guess I shouldn’t be laughing at it. I should be pumping him up.”

Once friends and training partners, Faber and Dillashaw have been on edge since the current titleholder in 2015 left Faber’s gym, Team Alpha Male, to train with former TAM head coach Duane Ludwig in Colorado. Since then, many TAM fighters have accused Dillashaw of lying and disrespecting the team. Dillashaw and Garbrandt coached the drama-filled The Ultimate Fighter 25 opposite each other earlier this year, further igniting their rivalry.

Dillashaw’s win over Garbrandt was important not only because he claimed the 135-pound belt at Madison Square Garden, but because he also bested all of Team Alpha Male in a personal competition — which, of course, is probably not even close to being over.

For now, however, Dillashaw is targeting a flyweight title fight against champ Demetrious Johnson.
