The upcoming UFC Fight Night 103 event — which is set to go down on Jan 15, 2017 inside Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona — is starting to fill out nicely, as FOX Sports is reporting that a Bantamweight matchup between Jimmie Rivera and Bryan Caraway is close to being finalized for the network-televised event.
Winner of a 19 straight, Rivera (20-1) is coming off an impressive unanimous decision victory over longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Urijah Faber at UFC 203 a couple months back.
It was without a doubt the biggest win of his career and was filled with its fair share of controversy.
As for Caraway (21-7), he’s racked up a two straight victories including upsetting highly-touted prospect Aljamain Sterling this past summer. “Kid Lightning” began to campaign for a shot at the 135-pound strap after the win, but ultimately fell on deaf ears, as Cody Garbrandt was awarded the next championship fight against Dominick Cruz, which is set to pop off at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, 2016.
A win over the streaking Rivera should put him closer to his much-desired title fight, while Jimmie can solidify his status as a top contender should he get one over on Caraway.
UFC Fight Night 103 is expected to be headlined by a five-round featherweight main event pitting top division prospect Yair Rodriguez against longtime veteran and former two-division champion, B.J. Penn.
