Abel Trujillo and James Vick squared off in a lightweight contest tonight (Sat., Feb. 4, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 104 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Power puncher Abel Trujillo was riding a three-fight win streak, while Texas native James Vick was coming off his first loss to top-ranked lightweight Beneil Dariush.

Trujillo came out stalking the longer man. There was a definite feeling out process, with Vick eventually opening up with a couple kicks. Trujillo dove for a double-leg and got it, picking Vick off the mat and slamming him down. Vick looked for a guillotine, locking up Trujillo’s head to stymie his advance. Trujillo broke his grip, but Vick got back to his feet. He turned Trujillo to the cage until the shorter man worked his way free. Vick threw several kicks, then backed out of the way of a Trujillo charge. He landed a combination that ended in a body kick, then backed Vick up and seemed to tag him with a combination. Trujillo ducked under for a takedown, and Vick again counted with a guillotine attempt, staying upright as the round ended.

Trujillo landed a nice left hook to open the second round. Vick threw a couple kicks, then they exchanged lead hooks. Trujillo landed a solid overhand and Vick countered with a combination. He landed a jab, then threw two kicks. Trijillo dove in for a takedown but Vick defended. Vick was using a side kick to the body, and Trujillo kept looking for that left hook. He tried for another takedown, Vick fought it off and got a takedown of his own. Trujillo found himself deep in a D’Arce choke attempt from the long-armed Vick. He stayed composed, but Vick got on top and squeezed tight. Eventually Trujillo out-lasted the choke, and Vick stayed in side control. Vick went for the choke again, but Trujillo got back to his feet. He looked exhausted, and Vick landed a knee and then a spinning back kick as the round ended.

Vick rocked Trujillo badly with a flying knee to open the third. Trujillo threw overhands as Vick began hunting for the kill. Trujillo ducked for a takedown off a Vick kick, but Vick got on top and went for that D’Arce choke again, and this time he got the tap! Great bounce-back win for James Vick, who gained back his prospect status with a disciplined, decisive performance.

In the post-fight interview, Vick asked to be included on the UFC 211 Dallas card in May, and begged for the 50K Performance bonus.

Official result: James Vick def. Abel Trujillo at 49 seconds of Round 3
