Kelvin Gastelum will look to stake a claim as a Middleweight title threat this Saturday evening (March 11, 2017) when he takes on Vitor Belfort inside Centro de Formacao Olimpica de Fortaleza in Fortaleza, Brazil. The two will headline UFC Fight Night 106, which will air live and free on FOX Sports 1.
The co-featured fight of the night will showcase Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who will look to put together his longest win streak since 2007 at the expense of Gian Villante, while Edson Barboza squares off with Beneil Dariush one fight prior.
It’s a solid line up, so let’s take a closer look:
What Went Wrong With UFC 209?
Three of our five picks carried the day. If Mirsad Bektic had just decided to keep eating Darren Elkins alive on the feet, it would have been four. Aside from that debacle, Paul Craig proved a bad pick. He went for more head-and-arm throws than you’d see in an early-2010s women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) match and his defense could charitably be described as lackadaisical. That is not an adjective you want attached to any part of your game. Still, we came out ahead. David Teymur and Cynthia Calvillo are the heroes we deserve.
UFC Fight Night 106 Odds For The Undercard:
Kevin Lee (-145) vs. Francisco Trinaldo (+125)
Sergio Moraes (-205) vs. Davi Ramos (+165)
Rani Yahya (-160) vs. Joe Soto (+140)
Michel Prazeres (-240) vs. Josh Burkman (+200)
Jeremy Kennedy (-115) vs. Rony Jason (-105)
Paulo Henrique Costa (-240) vs. Garreth McLellan (+200)
Thoughts: I am honestly rather surprised that Trinaldo is an underdog — I expected something like -110/-110 or -125/-105 either way. As old as Trinaldo is, he’s won seven consecutive fights and managed to stop Paul Felder when the likes of Edson Barboza couldn’t. Many of his issues seem to be a thing of the past and he has the experience and raw physical strength to give Lee all sorts of headaches.
As I mentioned in the preview (read it here), I have no idea why UFC made Michel Prazeres vs. Josh Burkman. Knocking off Gilbert Burns should have put “Trator” in line to face someone in at least the division’s Top 20, not a guy with one win in his last six fights. And Burkman didn’t even look good in that win. Prazeres is going to bulldoze him something awful.
UFC Fight Night 106 Odds For The Main Card:
Kelvin Gastelum (-420) vs. Vitor Belfort (+335)
Mauricio Rua (-140) vs. Gian Villante (+120)
Edson Barboza (-170) vs. Beneil Dariush (+150)
Jussier Formiga (-125) vs. Ray Borg (+105)
Marion Reneau (-125) vs. Bethe Correia (+105)
Tim Means (-255) vs. Alex Oliveira (+215)
Thoughts: Let’s keep up the Brazilian theme, shall we? Edson Barboza completes our ensemble. The thing about Barboza vs. Dariush is that UFC has given Edson so many pressure fighters that he’s finally figured out how to deal with him. He utterly dominated a solid puncher and capable wrestler in Gilbert Melendez last time out and Dariush — while a right headache to deal with — has neither Michael Johnson’s speed nor Tony Ferguson’s inhuman durability. Plus, Barboza’s Muay Thai experience should make him far less vulnerable to Dariush’s clinch than Rashid Magomedov was. Cram him in a parlay and let’s see what happens.
UFC Fight Night 106 Best Bets:
