Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans remains winless since 2013.
Evans and Sam Alvey squared in a middleweight matchup Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 114 in Mexico City.
And while the bout at Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City won’t be remembered as one of the most action-packed contests in UFC history, Alvey did enough to leave town with a victory. He took two out of three 29-28 scorecards for a split decision.
Evans had his best round in the first, as he utilized his wrestling game to keep Alvey from getting untracked.
The 37-year-old Evans appeared to tire in Mexico City’s high altitude, however, as he noticeably slowed in round two. Alvey, for his part, also worked at a methodical pace, but he was smart in landing counterstrikes when Evans, who was 2-for-12 on his takedown attempts, tried to shoot in.
The third was more of the same. If there was any doubt left, Alvey landed solid knees in the clinch late to seal matters.
With the victory, Alvey, a Team Quest fighter, improved to 31-9 with 1 no-contest. He’s won five of his past six fights.
Evans (19-7-1) has now dropped four in a row and six of his past eight. Five of the six losses in that span have come via decision. His last victory is over Chael Sonnen at UFC 167 in Nov. 2013.
