There was no official Fight of the Night at UFC Fight Night 86 in the UFC’s debut in Croatia, but there were plenty of performance-bonus winners.
In front of a sellout crowd of 13,177 at Arena Zagreb in the nation’s capital city, heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis earned $50,000 for his first-round stoppage of Gabriel Gonzaga. It wasn’t easy for Lewis as Gonzaga took the American down and ultimately obtained back mount in the beginning of the bout before Lewis was able to escape to his feet. There were some controversial referee separations, but Lewis flashed his trademark power, landing a flurry on ‘Napao’ with a punishing right hand that closed the show. The end came officially at 4:48 of the first. The win bumps Lewis’s record to 15-4 with 1 no-contest while Gonzaga drops to 17-11.
Lightweight prospect Mairbek Taisumov also claimed $50,000 by stopping UFC newcomer Damir Hadzovic in the first round with a blistering uppercut that also served as a walkoff knockout. The taller, longer Hadzovic had his moments where he connected with crosses and leg kicks, but the diversity of strikes and accuracy from Taisumov was just too much. He backed Hadzovic up to the fence and collapsed him with a sensational rear-hand uppercut. The end came at 3:44 of the very first round. The win sends Taisumov to 25-5 while Hadzovic sinks to 10-3.
Alejandro Perez had his hands and ankles full on Sunday, but The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America winner was able to get past the leg locks of Ian Entwhistle while earing $50,000 and a Performance of the Night bonus. Entwhistle went right to work, diving with scissor takedown attempts, but Perez fought off everything the heel hook expert had to offer.
