Despite weighing in at more than five pounds over the 155-pound limit, Brazilian slugger Alex Oliveira still took to the Octagon earlier tonight (Sat., Oct. 1, 2016) at UFC Fight Night 96 live on FOX Sports 1 from Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, as he took on former Bellator lightweight champion Will Brooks, who was looking to claim his second victory since joining Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) earlier this year.
The bigger and longer Oliveira opened up with a quick leg kick before the action tied up along the cage. The Brazilian remained heavy on the outside, but Brooks was too strong to move. Referee Herb Dean refused to break the action up as both mean jockeyed for position along the Octagon fence for over two minutes. Brooks finally took advantage and secured a slamming takedown on “Cowboy” before the first frame came to an end.
As Round 2 began, color commentator Daniel Cormier said Brooks told his corner he injured his rib. That’s funny because “ill Will” showed no signs of the ailment as he secured a quick takedown on Oliveira to gain full mount. As the Brazilian turned over and got back to his feet, Brooks hung on and threatened with a rear-naked choke. Oliveira shook it off and secured his own takedown. Brooks would look to secure another submission attempt later in the round, but neither fighter did that much damage at all.
Oliveira came out aggressive in the third round as he caught Brooks with a right hand as the former Bellator champ was lunging forward.
