Tony Ferguson has now won nine straight fights inside the Octagon. “El Cucuy,” (22-3), defeated Rafael dos Anjos by unanimous decision (26-8) at UFC Fight Night 98 earlier tonight (Sat., Nov. 5, 2016) inside Arena de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico. All three judges scored the contest 49-47 for Ferguson, who utilized his unorthodox striking attacks over the course of the 25-minute fight to out-duel the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion.
In the first round, the fight stayed standing for the opening three minutes until Ferguson slipped to the canvas. Dos Anjos jumped down to try and capitalize, but Ferguson made it back to his feet. The round was a competitive one, but the former UFC Lightweight champion appeared to have the slight advantage as he landed the more significant strikes in the round.
In the second, Ferguson came marching foward and the two began throwing more frequently than they were in round one. Dos Anjos got poked in the eye by Ferguson and referee Herb Dean stopped the bout to let dos Anjos recover. Both fighters landed as the round grew longer, but it was Ferguson who had in dos Anjos stunned after landing a straight left hand with just under a minute left. The No.3-ranked UFC Lightweight came in aggressive afterward, but dos Anjos recovered.
Ferguson landed a few strikes in the beginning of the third round and dos Anjos landed a takedown, but “El Cucuy” bounced right back up to his feet. Ferguson began letting it go with spinning-back fists and inverted elbow strikes, but dos Anjos, now bloodied, weathered the storm and kept coming.
