Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, by now you’ve probably seen Rougned Odor’s perfectly placed punch right on Jose Bautista’s jaw during the Texas Rangers vs. Toronto Blue Jays game that occurred last Sunday (May 15, 2016) in Arlington.
After all, it’s been on every highlight reel of every sports show around the country.
In fact, the strike has even caught the attention of the mixed martial arts (MMA) community, as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight contender Alan Jouban recently told TMZ that he approves of Odor’s technique.
“I saw that on social media. He kind of set the bar with the nice straight right hand. He set the bar for the combat sports world. You see it so many times; like soccer players and basketball players that can’t throw a punch to save their lives. That was a clean little punch right there. I’m surprised that the guy didn’t drop. I was kind of shocked. I thought for sure he was going to do down, but that was a good straight right hand, on the button. Good form, down the middle, turned it over. Bautista has a good chin, but you don’t want to keep getting hit like that. I think in other sports, they walk up with the intention to get pushed and don’t expect to get hit. He went into that fight pushing and he got clocked, so I think he learned his lesson.”
As a result of his actions, Odor was suspended eight games by Major League Baseball (MLB) and fined $5,000.
