UFC fighter rankings: Flyweight shook up by UFC Auckland upset

Ben Nguyen has taken a big leap up the flyweight rankings in this week’s update.

The flyweight division in the UFC is very much in flux right now. The battle between 125-pound champion Demetrious Johnson and the UFC has brought rumors to the surface that the division might just get closed down altogether. But for now, guys are still fighting to earn their way to a title shot. And at UFC Auckland last weekend, a new contender made himself known.

Despite that preamble, let’s be clear here – UFC Auckland was not a very relevant event. Only three divisions saw any rankings movement at all, and one of them didn’t even seem to be related to the event at all.

But hey, there’s a post to write, so let’s get it it.

P4P – No changes.

Heavyweight – Headliner Mark Hunt took out Derrick Lewis, and that bumped him up one spot to number six. Lewis dropped to seven. Stefan Struve also moved up into a tie with Alexander Volkov for the 10 spot ahead of their battle in Rotterdam.

Light Heavyweight – No changes.

Middleweight – Elias Theodorou entered the list at 15. The Mane Event is now a ranked fighter.

Welterweight – No changes.

Lightweight – No changes.

Featherweight – No changes.

Bantamweight – No changes.

Flyweight – Ben Nguyen’s extremely quick win over former title challenger Tim Elliott sent him rocketing up the 125-pound rankings from 12 to 8. Dustin Ortiz moved up one to 9, and fellow UFC Auckland winner John Moraga moved back into the top 10. Inactive Ian McCall dropped two spots to 11, while Elliott dropped four spots to 12.

Women’s Bantamweight – No changes.

Women’s Flyweight – No changes.
