Edson Barboza once again scored a highlight reel knockout, this time via flying knee over Beneil Dariush
Edson Barboza brought himself further up the rankings after another huge win in front of his countrymen in Fortaleza, Brazil. The number five-ranked lightweight contender once again made the highlight reels with his flying knee knockout win over Beneil Dariush in the second round of their fight.
What was the high point of the fight?
It looked like Dariush was getting the better of Barboza on the feet, particularly in the first round. He was finding a home for his punches from close range, which left Barboza inefficient and tentative.
The momentum did swing slightly towards Barboza’s favor in the second round, when Dariush began slowing down. To shake things up, Dariush decided to shoot for a single leg takedown, but only met a flying knee to the face, ending the fight in decisive fashion, once again.
Where do these two go from here?
Barboza says he is ready to fight for the belt after his performance, as he picked up his third straight win. But given the depth of the lightweight division, he may need to take another big fight to prove himself worthy. Since Khabib Nurmagomedov’s status remains uncertain, he can test himself against Tony Ferguson, who is still likely aching to get back in the cage after his UFC 209 fight got scrapped.
Dariush likely drops out from the rankings and will need to fight his way back up again. He can take a fight against someone like Dustin Poirier, who is also looking to get a win momentum going.
Watch it now, later or never?
Edson Barboza i becoming known for highlight reel finishes, and this fight was another notable one. Definitely a must-watch.
