Shogun Rua picks up his third straight win via a third round stoppage over Gian Villante.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua proved that he can still hang with his contemporaries at light heavyweight. The former 205-pound champion scored a third round TKO win over Serra-Longo fighter Gian Villante.
What was the high point of the fight?
The fight remained predominantly on the feet, with both men trading more punches than kicks. Villante did have his flashes of brilliance in the second round, but it was Rua who was able to land the harder shots.
Villante threw more kicks in the third, upon the advice of his corner, but Rua remained a step ahead. It was a matter of time before another one of his hard right hands landed that stunned Villante, in which Rua capitalized with a barrage of punches that eventually led to his third straight win.
Where do these two go from here?
Currently ranked number 13, Villante likely drops further down the rankings, and will need to pick up a string of wins to at the very least get to the top ten.
At 35-years-old, Rua showed that he still has a lot left in his tank. Currently at number six in the rankings, he may need to another victory to get himself back in the title contender conversation. Perhaps a fight against Jimi Manuwa could help answer those questions.
Watch it now, later or never?
Seeing a performance that is reminiscent of the Shogun of old is always refreshing to see, making this a must-watch fight.
