Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight contender Gunnar Nelson commands the headlining spot against Argentinean standout Santiago Ponzinibbio for the upcoming UFC Fight Night 113 mixed martial arts (MMA) event inside SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sun., July 16, 2017.
“Being main event is huge,” Nelson said. “But when it comes to the fight, the fight is just the fight. Only difference is five rounds. I try to just focus on the fight itself, getting that win, that’s what it’s about.”
After dropping a lopsided decision loss to top contender Demian Maia, Nelson (14-2-1) was able to rattle off back-to-back submission victories over Albert Tumenov and Alan Jouban. The Icelander has 15 finishes in 16 wins.
“I have been more strategic in my last few fights,” he continued. “I take more time cornering my opponent. Not just one move ahead, reading a lot of moves ahead. Just getting a better picture of what’s going on in the fight.”
Ponzinibbio (24-3), meanwhile, rebounded from a technical knockout loss to Lorenz Larkin to fire off four straight wins. “Gente Boa” was last seen outpointing the venerable Nordine Taleb back in February.
“He’s a tough guy, he likes to keep it on the feet,” Nelson said. “He’s like a volume striker, he likes to bang it out. I think that will be his plan, to keep it on the feet. I don’t know how good he is on the ground, but I hope we find out.”
Fun fight. Who ya’ got?
