“The Iceman” goeth?

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, who joined the promotion’s hall of fame after retiring from mixed martial arts (MMA) in late 2010, is getting rather chummy with the boys over at Spike TV.

Specifically, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker.

The 47-year-old Liddell recently had lunch with the former Strikeforce CEO, according to a report from MMA Junkie, to discuss a potential role as “brand ambassador” for the Viacom-owned promotion.

A position not uncommon among retired (or deposed) UFC veterans.

While that sounds all well and good on paper, it’s no secret Liddell is contemplating a return to cage fighting (more on that here). As an athlete and competitor, no doubt “The Iceman” is unsatisfied with how his UFC career ended.

Three straight knockout losses, to be exact.

And it’s not like he has anything better to do, having been fired from his position as Vice President of Business Development after the promotion was sold to WME | IMG last summer (details).

Either way, Liddell — one of the most popular and recognizable MMA fighters of all time — would represent a major score for Bellator MMA, though we probably should have seen this coming.

And hey, it sure beats the alternative.
