Sergio Pettis picks up his fourth straight win against Brandon Moreno in Mexico City.

The UFC’s 2017 card in Mexico City was capped off with a scrap between two top ten flyweights. Sergio Pettis defeated Brandon Moreno, inching himself one step closer to a title shot.

What was the high point of the fight?

It took one round for Pettis to find his range in rhythm against Moreno’s unorthodox striking style, but once he did, he was able to land the big shots that he is comfortable with.

The grappling exchange, though a sparse, was notable, to say the least. Both men were comfortable during the scrambles, showing the diversity of their respective games. I’d say it was a little more evenly matched compared to when the fight was on the feet, in which Pettis had the edge.

Where do these two go from here?

Moreno was on an 11th fight win streak (three straight wins in the UFC), only to be broken in front of his home crowd. He still deserves a spot in the top ten, but he will evidently need a big win against a top contender to get himself back up the ladder.

Pettis himself said during the Octagon interview that he feels he would still need another fight to make improvements before contending for the title. Perhaps the UFC can finally make his supposed fight against Henry Cejudo happen, then give him a shot at the belt if he wins convincingly.

Watch it now, later, or never?

It was an impressive fight between two young competitors proving their worth at the UFC’s flyweight division. Watch it now.
