The UFC Moncton marquee matchup wrapped up with the promotion’s #10 light heavyweight Anthony Smith choking out the #2 Volkan Oezdemir in the third round. Smith has now won three-straight at 205 pounds, and just set himself for another big fight his next time out. He called for a title shot in the post-fight interview.
Smith shot in on his opponent right out of the gate, but Oezdemir did a sound job of staying vertical. Oezdemir opened up with a flurry of punches as Smith’s back was to the cage, but Smith was able to free himself into open space before anything could really land. There was an accidental eye poke from Smith that caused a brief pause in the action.
Oezdemir opened up the second round with a set of unchecked leg kicks, and Smith responded with a set of flurries. Coming forward, Smith gave up a takedown and spent some time working with Oezdemir on top of the turtle position. Smith did not return to his feet in this round.
Smith began finding a home for his cross in the third frame as Oezdemir went on the defensive. Both fighters were showing signs of fatigue, and then Smith blasted a takedown and even took the back. Smith locked up a body triangle and locked up an RNC, and after a bit of adjusting, he got the tap!
