Tyron Woodley is inching closer towards that elusive welterweight title fight.
According to sources, the UFC is currently moving towards booking Woodley vs. Robbie Lawler for the 170-pound title at UFC 201 in Atlanta. MMA Fighting first reported that the fight was in the works two weeks ago, and now it has moved into the finalizing stages. It’s not official just yet, but If all goes to plan, the fight could be announced as soon as this week.
Lawler (27-10, 1 NC) has won his last five fights in a row. He has successfully defended the 170-pound title twice, most recently against Carlos Condit in January at UFC 195. That five-round fight is considered by many pundits as one of the very best fights of 2016.
Woodley (15-3) has won two fights in a row and four of his last five. He hasn’t fought since a Jan. 2015 win over Kelvin Gastelum because he was scheduled to meet Johny Hendricks at UFC 192 in October, however, Hendricks failed to make weight and pulled out of the fight the day before the event.
A logjam of contenders has developed at 170 pounds, with Demian Maia, Neil Magny, Stephen Thompson, Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit all possessing strong arguments to be considered next for Lawler, however, it now appears Woodley will get the nod.
UFC 201 is scheduled for July 30, and it will take place at Phillips Arena in Atlanta.
