Jimmie Rivera (19-1) continued his winning ways at UFC on FOX 18 earlier tonight (Sat. Jan. 30, 2016), extending his win streak to 18 straight.
Rivera, 26, defeated Iuri Alcantara (33-7 1NC) by unanimous decision inside Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. All three judges scored the bout 29-28.
The opening round was a closely contested one between the No.14-ranked UFC bantamweight, Alcantara and the New Jersey native, Rivera. Both fighters landed some good strikes, but neither could take full command of the action. Rivera landed a big takedown right before the round ended, but the Brazilian immediately popped back up as the horn sounded.
in the second, Rivera was more aggressive and landed some significant punches early on. WIth about two minutes remaining, the Tiger Schulman’s trained fighter pushed Alcantara up against the cage, but couldn’t capitalize. Referee Liam Kerrigan halted the action and restarted both fighers in the center of the Octagon. The Brazilian landed a straight left that knocked Rivera to the canvas moments later. Rivera got back up and landed his second takedown of the fight.
In the final round Alcantara stared to throw more leg kicks, and Rivera caught one and swept his other leg out with a low kick, knocking him to the mat. Rivera continued to pressure the Brazilian, but Alcantara continued to keep him at bay with body kicks. WIth less than a minute left, Alcantara dropped Rivera to the mat with another left straight. Rivera got back up and shot in on a single, but could not complete the takedown.
A huge win for Rivera, who has won his first three fights in the UFC. This win over the ranked Alcantara should see him enter the official UFC bantamweight rankings.
Disappointing loss for Alcantara, who falls to 7-3 1NC) in UFC competition.
