Glover Teixeira made quick work of Rashad Evans in the UFC on FOX 19 main event on Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.
Teixeira and Evans have both hung around the top of the UFC light heavyweight division for a long time, but with Evans coming off of a loss to Ryan Bader in his last fight and Teixeira only 24 months removed from failing to take the belt from Jon Jones, Saturday night’s fight was a critical step back into the thick of crowded title talks.
It was Teixeira that not only took a step forward, he took a gigantic leap towards being considered for a future title shot with his first-round knockout of Evans.

From the opening bell, Teixeira was moving forward, pressuring Evans. Although both took some early swings, neither landed anything substantial for the first couple of minutes.
But when Texieira started to find his range, he zeroed in quickly. Just past the midway point of the opening round, he clipped Evans with a right hand, which was followed by a left hook that sent the former UFC light heavyweight champion to the canvas.
Evans wasn’t quite out yet, but after two or three follow-up right hands from Teixeira, referee Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight.
The victory marked the seventeenth first-round finish of Teixeira’s 25-4 career, which he knows puts him in a solid position in the UFC light heavyweight division.
“Right at the top,” Teixeira said of his place in the 205-pound weight class before taking aim at a fight with another top contender.
