Michael Chiesa clearly wasn’t happy with how the first round of his lightweight matchup with Beniel Dariush went down, as he seemed a step slower to the draw that his foe.
So the former Ultimate Fighter winner came out took matters into his own hands in the second round of their UFC on FOX 19 matchup in Tampa on Saturday. Chiesa won a battle of submission artists via rear-naked choke at 1:22 of the second.
“It feels really good, I asked for a tough opponent when I asked for Beneil, and he delivered,” said Chiesa (14-2), who has won three straight fights.
Dariush got the better of the opening round, as he peppered Chiesa with legs kicks and kept him from getting untracked. But Chiesa came out flying in the second round. He scored a takedown, worked a rear-naked choke on the ground, and kept it up when Dariush got back to his feet.
Though Chiesa had hooked Dariush’s jaw, the pressure was such that Dariush (12-2) tapped anyway, bringing an end to a five-fight win streak.
“If you let me lock my hands in any position, you’re in trouble,” Cheisa said.
He finished with a callout of Tony Ferguson, who was supposed to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov on Saturday, but had to pull out.
“Tony Ferguson, you and me man, main event,” Chiesa said. “Him and me would be a great fight.”
