UFC on FOX 20 results: Edson Barboza batters leg of Gilbert Melendez en route to unanimous decision victory

Edson Barboza (18-4) battered Gilbert Melendez (22-6) with leg kicks en route to a unanimous decision at UFC on FOX 20 earlier tonight (Sat. July 23, 2016) inside United Center in Chicago, Ill.

Two judges scored the bout 30-27, with the third giving a 29-28 score card.

Barboza, 30, landed two nasty low leg kicks in the second round, which changed the momentum of the bout. Melendez was game throughout and briefly had Barboza in trouble after landing a right hand in the second, but could not capitalize. Barboza continued attacking the leg for the remainder of the three-fight co-main event.

The opening round was a competitive one with both Melendez and Barboza having success with their striking. The Brazilian landed a bit more than Melendez, who also missed a pair of takedown attempts.

In the second, Barboza easily thwarted a takedown attempt and Melendez ended up on his back. Barboza moved away and allowed Melendez to return to his feet. The No.6-ranked UFC lightweight landed two consecutive low kicks to the left leg of Melendez, which sent him to the canvas each time.The former Strikeforce champion connected with a big right hand that rocked Barboza, but he wasn’t able to capitalize. Barboza landed another nasty low kick to the left leg of Melendez and took him down right before the end of the round.

In the third, Barboza landed another low kick to the left leg of Melendez, and the California native was noticeably hobbling on it and adjusting his stance. Melendez tried for another takedown, but could not land it. Melendez ate another kick and began bouncing on it in pain. Barboza stayed on the outside to ride out the remainder of the round and landed a few more leg kicks before the fight ended.
