Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight contenders Carlos Condit and Demian Maia clashed last night (Aug. 27, 2016) at UFC on FOX 21 inside Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Condit is one of the best fighters in Welterweight history, but he’s never held the official UFC strap. Opposite Maia in a potential title eliminator, this was a hugely important bout for Condit’s future in the division. Similarly, the stakes were high for the jiu-jitsu ace. Maia has been looking excellent in recent fights, but he’s also not likely to get any younger, meaning the pressure was on if he was to secure a shot at the 170-pound strap.

Maia feinted his way into a single leg takedown and landed it within the first minute of the bout. Immediately, he began working towards the back mount, and Condit tried to stand and shake him off.
It didn’t work.
Maia broke his opponent down to the mat and began hunting for the choke. Just seconds later, Maia began to crank on the jaw, and his hold slid underneath the chin. Before long, Condit was forced to submit. This was textbook Maia. He moved into his single leg takedown well, and he was able to finish the initial dump without having to work all that hard from it. Once there, he kept his hips heavy and did not take long to pass through Condit’s dangerous guard.
Once in back mount, Maia did a great job of stretching out his opponent and hipping into the position. Once Maia had broken his foe down, he attacked the neck and finished the fight.
That’s all there is to it.
