Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to FOX yesterday (Sat., Aug. 27, 2016) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada gave fight fans who packed into the Rogers Arena plenty to talk about.
In the main event of the evening, Demian Maia put on one heck of a show for the fans, as he walked right through Carlos Condit, choking him out in under two minutes thanks to his world class submission skills that have forced the best of them to tap (see it again here).
In the co-main event, Anthony Pettis got back in the win column after taking out Charles Oliveira via third-round guillotine in his first-ever fight in the Featherweight division (see it).
Winner: Demian Maia.
Who He Should Fight Next: Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson winner.
There is no doubt that Maia more than solidified his shot at the 170-pound title after blitzing right through Carlos Condit, a man who hadn’t been finished in over a decade. If anything, it will be in Maia’s best interest not to pack on the pounds after his big win over “The Natural Born Killer,” as he should stay in decent shape just in case either Woodley or Thompson have to bow out of their title fight.
Winner: Anthony Pettis.
Who He Should He Fight Next: Jeremy Stephens
Pettis made a successful debut at 145 pounds after he choked out Oliveira in round three, and he looked good doing it, too, as he showed flashed of the old “Showtime” that wowed with his striking. Now that he’s found a new home, Pettis can look ahead to new challenges, but also some old ones. That’s because another showdown against “Lil’ Heathen” should be in order for Anthony.
